ACCA Media Statement: Continuing Care Funding in Alberta Budget 2022

Mar 03, 2022

Calgary – The Alberta Continuing Care Association (ACCA) welcomes the Government of Alberta’s announcement of almost $3.7 billion in funding to expand programs and services for seniors and Albertans requiring continuing care services.

Home care is a vital part of continuing care in Alberta, and the ACCA has been advocating for increased support to help more Albertans get the care they need in their homes and communities. Albertans have clearly indicated a desire to age with dignity, in their own homes as long as possible, close to family and friends. The ACCA applauds the $750 million allocated for Home Care, this 12% increase is welcomed and will dramatically enhance services in the community, as well as enable equitable and seamless transitions to continuing care homes when required.

The focused approach taken to enhancing community care services in Alberta, through a $122 million funding increase will benefit Albertans across the province, including those residing in supportive living communities. The investment of $204 million in capital funding, and planned development of 1,515 new continuing care spaces will be critical to sustaining the continuing care sector, while allowing the evolving needs of Albertans to be met.

“These capital investments in continuing care will go a long way to building new capacity in the province, provide much-needed upgrades to older assets, and ensure a better quality of life and care for Alberta seniors and persons with disabilities in communities right across the province.”

Karim Kassam, Vice-Chair, Alberta Continuing Care Association

“This announcement is a welcome step towards improving the quality and access of continuing care services in the province. The ACCA is grateful for the ongoing collaboration we have with Minister Copping, Alberta Health, and Alberta Health Services, and our members look forward to continuing to work together to facilitate improved quality of life, and care for all Albertans requiring continuing care.”
