Continuing Care Designated an Essential Service

Apr 06, 2020

All Continuing Care Staff Now Able to Access Programs and Supports Available, Including Child-Care

All Continuing Care staff (home care, licensed supportive living and long term care) are now designated as Essential Workers. For a complete listing of Essential Services, please click here. This designation recognizes the essential role of Continuing Care staff in the health system, many of whom have been experiencing difficulties receiving expedited COVID-19 tests, accessing Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and securing child-care.

This designation follows advocacy efforts by ACCA and other sector stakeholders.

The Government of Alberta has also announced expanded eligibility for select licensed child care centres to provide child care for all essential service workers. An updated list of these centres can be found at (under info for Albertans) and will be updated as new centres become available.

Please be advised that Alberta Health Services has placed new limitations on visitations of loved ones in Long Term Care, Supportive Living or Congregate Living Settings throughout the pandemic. Sites have implemented a "No VIsitor Policy", with exceptions of:

  • For end of life situations, one Essential Visitor at a time is allowed.
  • Sites may in rare situations make an exception and allow one Essential Visitor where the resident's care needs cannot be met without their assistance.

Keeping Continuing Care services fully staffed and supported is critical to ongoing management of the pandemic. We will continue to update the Membership on changes and communications from AHS as they become available to us.
