9th Annual All Seniors Games 2018: Laughter is the Best Medicine

Feb 08, 2018

The theme of this year’s 9th Annual All Seniors Games 2018 is Laughter is the Best Medicine. Exercise is good for the mind, body and soul while laughter builds relationships, relieves stress and (research suggests) strengthens the immune system. The week-long event was launched February 5, at all 29 All Seniors Care Retirement Residences across Canada. ACCA joined the opening ceremonies at the St. Albert retirement residence. On hand to kick-off the games lead by a rousing bagpiper was Her Worship, Mayor Cathy Heron of St. Albert, St. Albert MLA Marie Renaud, many volunteers and kids from the local Lois E. Hole Elementary School.

The Olympic-style games include walking, bowling, billiards, bocce, virtual golf, shuffleboard, cards, trivia and archery. Yes, you read that correctly - the athletes use special arrows to hit fun targets. “20 to 25 people taking part in each event”, said Karissa Visser, health and wellness director at the retirement residence. The top performers will receive bronze, silver, or gold medals. Resident volunteers help organize the games and serve to create an environment of enjoyable competition with a focus on personal best. Friday’s closing of the All Seniors Games coincidentally coincides with the opening of the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang South Korea giving Alberta seniors even more to look forward to.
